Keeping warm this winter - Top tips
As the temperature drops there are loads of little things you can do to keep yourself warm this winter. Here are our favourite top tips.
Dressing Warm
Wear loose, light and warm layers. Trapped air between the layers acts as an insulator and you can get your temp just right by adding or removing layers.
Wool, cotton or fleece clothes are the best for keeping you warm.
Mittens are warmer than figured gloves.
If you’re going out always wear a warm coat, gloves, hat and shoes. Head, feet and hands lose heat most quickly.
If you’re going to be spending a lot of time, outside apply a bit of Vaseline to the uncovered areas of your face. It acts as a moisture insulator and helps prevent your face from getting dry or chapped in the cold air.
Wear warm clothes in bed. Thermals, bed socks and maybe even a hat if you need it.
Eating and drinking
Your body keeps itself warm through burning the food you eat so make sure you eat regular meals.
Try to eat meals containing carbohydrates. There are good carbohydrates in bread, pasta, rice and potatoes.
Make sure you drink enough. When your body gets dehydrated cold sets in more easily.
Keeping your house warm
Make sure you keep warm all the rooms you use a lot.
The recommended temperature for rooms is around 18-21°C (64-70°F).
Keep all the internal doors and windows in your house closed. This will keep the heat in your rooms.
Use draft excluders on any doors that you can feel a draft through.
Don’t block your radiators as this will cut down the heat they will give.
and finally…
If it gets really cold use a hot water bottle or one of the microwavable warmers. You can keep these with you throughout the day to keep you extra toastie.
